Torsion in the Nottingham group

From local class-field theory and higher ramification theory one gets a classification up to conjugacy of the torsion elements of arbitrary order in the Nottingham group over a finite field, in terms of continuous characters on the multiplicative group of principal units in the ring of formal power series over the field. An essential part of this classification is to partition the torsion eleme...

On the norm of the derived‎ subgroups of all subgroups of a finite group

In this paper‎, ‎we give a complete proof of Theorem 4.1(ii) and a new‎ ‎elementary proof of Theorem 4.1(i) in [Li and Shen‎, ‎On the‎ ‎intersection of the normalizers of the derived subgroups of all‎ ‎subgroups of a finite group‎, ‎ J‎. ‎Algebra, ‎323  (2010) 1349--1357]‎. ‎In addition‎, ‎we also give a generalization of Baer's Theorem‎.

On the Commensurator of the Nottingham Group

Let p ≥ 5 be a prime number. We prove that the abstract commensurator of the Nottingham group N (Fp) coincides with its automorphism group, which is known to be a finite extension of N (Fp). As a corollary we deduce that the Nottingham group cannot be embedded as an open subgroup of a topologically simple group.

Commensurations and Subgroups of Finite Index of Thompson’s Group F

Thompson’s groups have been extensively studied since their introduction by Thompson in the 1960s, despite the fact that Thompson’s account [7] appeared only in 1980. They have provided examples of infinite finitely presented simple groups, as well as some other interesting counterexamples in group theory (see for example, Brown and Geoghegan [3]). Cannon, Floyd and Parry [4] give an excellent ...

On Finite Index Subgroups of a Universal Group

The orbifold group of the Borromean rings with singular angle 90 degrees, U , is a universal group, because every closed oriented 3–manifold M3 occurs as a quotient space M3 = H3/G, where G is a finite index subgroup of U . Therefore, an interesting, but quite difficult problem, is to classify the finite index subgroups of the universal group U . One of the purposes of this paper is to begin th...
